What To Bring

Students should come prepared to spend three days on the water. The cornerstone of this course is to collect real survey data against real targets in real weather conditions.

Therefore, students should come dressed appropriately for small boat operations. Dressed appropriately means: comfortable clothing (jeans, shorts & tee-shirt) and appropriate shoes (tennis shoes or boat shoes). Students should bring with them a foul weather jacket and a sweatshirt.

It is not uncommon for weather conditions to change rapidly on theater. If a student is prone to motion sickness, we recommend consulting with a physician about preventative measures. 

During the course, lunches and drinks will be provided. If a student has a particular food allergy or eating preference, please let us know and we will be more than happy to accommodate you.

Daily Itinerary

The Side Scan Sonar course will be five days long consisting of two days in the classroom and three days on the water. The on the water portions of the course will be conducted from a survey vessel operating out of Solomons Island, Maryland. 

DAY 1: CLASSROOM Introduction to Side Scan Sonar
Physics Review Side Scan Sonar Principals Introduction to Record Interpretation Case Studies Introduction to Survey Planning 

DAY 2: ON THE WATER Survey of Simple Objects/Seeded Field
Survey an area seeded with small to medium sized objects with some minor geologic features.

DAY 3: ON THE WATER Survey of Complex Objects/Geology
Survey several complex shipwreck sites, complex geology, and manmade structures. 

DAY 4: ON THE WATER Site Specific Surveys
Survey sites/objects/geology with variety of sonar settings, imaging angles, sonar range scales. Learn how to map and document an object or site. 

DAY 5: CLASSROOM Introduction topmost Processing
Complex image Interpretation Image Correction Mosaicing Introduction to Target Data basing.

Terms & Conditions

AzulMar Research, LLC will refund course tuition up to three weeks before the start date of the course, without penalty. After that date, refunds will only be issued if there is substitute student available to fill the enrollee’s places. 

AzulMar Research, LLC has designed this course to allow it to operate in most weather conditions. As a result, there will be no refunds for inclement weather conditions. If severe weather or equipment problems were to prevent us from teaching the course, make up days would be scheduled as soon as possible. 

AzulMar Research, LLC, reserves the right to cancel or reschedule any course. Enrollee’s will receive a full refund if they are unable to attend a rescheduled course.
